Geography
UPSC Geography notes — physical, Indian and world geography, resources and geophysical phenomena, for Prelims and GS Paper I.
Geography rewards understanding over memorisation: once you see why the monsoon reverses or why industries cluster where they do, both the MCQ and the 250-word answer follow.
What UPSC asks
- Prelims: physical geography concepts, Indian physiography, rivers, climate, soils, vegetation, and place-based questions drawn from the news (straits, rivers, mountain passes, national parks).
- Mains GS I: salient features of world physical geography; distribution of key natural resources; factors for the location of industries; geophysical phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and cyclones; changes in critical geographical features.
How to use these notes
Read physical geography first — it is the grammar for everything else — and keep an atlas open. Every place named in these notes is worth locating on a map at least once.
