Biogeography and Soils

UPSC notes on biogeography and soils — soil formation, profiles and processes, the soils of India, soil degradation, and the world's major biomes.

SyllabusGS I · Salient features of world physical geography; distribution of key natural resources

Biogeography studies how plants, animals and soils are distributed over the Earth and why. Soils sit at the meeting point of rock, climate and life: the same parent rock gives very different soils under a tropical rainforest and a desert. The world’s biomes — rainforests, savannas, deserts, grasslands, taiga and tundra — follow the same climatic controls.

What UPSC asks

  • Prelims: the properties and distribution of Indian soil types (black, red, laterite, alluvial, arid, saline), soil-forming processes, the soil profile, and matching grasslands or biomes to continents.
  • Mains GS I and GS III: soil degradation and desertification, soil health and its link to agriculture, and how climate shapes natural vegetation.
