Constitutional Framework
Making of the Indian Constitution — British-era Acts, the Constituent Assembly, the Preamble, salient features and sources — for UPSC Prelims and Mains.
SyllabusGS II · Indian Constitution — historical underpinnings, evolution, features, significant provisions and basic structure
This chapter is the foundation of GS Paper II and of Polity in Prelims. It traces how the Constitution came to be, from the Regulating Act of 1773 to the Constituent Assembly’s final sitting in January 1950, and what kind of document it produced.
What UPSC asks. Prelims picks exact facts: which Act introduced dyarchy or separate electorates, who chaired which Assembly committee, when the Objectives Resolution was adopted, which feature came from which foreign constitution, and the legal status of the Preamble. Mains asks you to evaluate — was the Assembly representative, is India truly federal, what does “secular” or “socialist” mean in the Preamble.
